Everyone sweats, but why do some people suffer from excessive underarm sweating. Here’s some of the questions that Dr Maria Gonzalez gets asked by her excessive underarm sweating patients at her Specialist Skin Clinic in London and Cardiff:
Why do we even need to sweat?
Sweat, also known as perspiration, is the body’s method of regulating its temperature and, in particular, cooling itself down when we become overheated, through exercise or stress maybe.
How does the body produce sweat?
On average, your body has over 2 million sweat glands, found over the entire body, present in the dermis. There are two types of sweat glands; the most common is called eccrine and it is this type that is found all over the body. The other type is apocrine and is mostly found in the underarm area. The eccrine glands are small glands that produce a clear, non-smelly fluid which works to cool the body. It is the apocrine glands, that only become activated during puberty, that produce a thicker fluid that produces a ‘sweat smell’.
What is excessive sweating?
Excessive underarm sweating or excessive sweating, known medically as hyperhidrosis, is the condition whereby the sufferer has overactive sweat glands, that produces much more sweat than is necessary to cool down the body. The overactive sweat glands also produce this excessive sweat continually and not just at times of over-exertion.
How common a problem is excessive sweating?
This is a relatively common condition – according to the NHS, there are thought to be over 1 million people in the UK affected by excessive sweating.
